Glastonbury

Glastonbury, set below the 520 foot high Glastonbury Tor, this small town is famous for its religious and historic roots. Originally the area was an island on a lake, this old landscape is best seen from the top of the Tor.

May be King Arthur's Isle of Avalon, he is said to be buried here, with his bones reburied in 1191, together with those of Guinevere, said to be Abbess of Glastonbury. With the ruined abbey dating from the 12th century, the town is certainly old.

The history is in the buildings, with monastic buildings, medieval churches, and  a 15th century abbey courthouse, the Tribunal. Historic pub, The George and Pilgrims, with its medieval facade.

The abbey, at the bottom of the Tor,  is said to where Joseph of Arimathea stuck his staff into the ground, which grew into a tree, the Glastonbury Thorn. He is also supposed to have brought with him the Holy Grail. There is a park and ride scheme to the Tor.

More recently, it is well known for the summer Glastonbury Festival held every year at Worthy Farm in nearby Pilton.
